Why you need to claim your Google Business Listing right now

Google Local Business listings comprise the part of Google search results called Google Places that show local businesses relevant to the search term.

As is typical with Google, they have been working on improving their ability to predict whether or not you want local results displayed, and have launched a new way of displaying results called this Google Places.  Instead of displaying 7-8 local mapped listings, they are now displaying 30-40 down the middle with the map on the right.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

These results are a blend of "organic" results and local businesses which shows how important local results are to Google, and therefore to your business.

What this means to you is that it is now critical to claim, optimize and participate in updating  your local business listing regularly, in order to be considered for display in local results.

Here are 5 steps to making the most out of your Google Places listing:

1. Claim your listing - if you aren't sure if you are listed, simply type in your company's name and the city you're in. Add your listing if you're not there, or claim the listing and watch the mail. Google will mail you a confirmation post card with a verification code.

2. Create your profile- add in your business hours, description of what you do, select the appropriate categories that are relevant to your business.

3. Add to your profile- add in photos of your location or product, add videos

4. Solicit reviews- this is now a consumer expectation, and interaction with your listing plays a large part in it's success. About 30% of your customers will have a gmail account already, use this to your advantage as they wont have to sign in to review your business. Simply send them a link and ask them to write a review.

5. Regular Updates- this is the most important step. Visit your places at least once a month if not more, and add in promotions/coupons, post articles to your listing etc.
The more often your profile is updated, the more relevant it will be considered by Google.
